I understand
that the endeavour of the International Institute of Health Sciences
and the Indian Board of Alternative Medicines is to evolve at
consensus on health and related issues amongst the different
disciplines of medical science and various systems of medicines. From
our own experiences the Tibetan medical system, like the Ayurvedic and
Unani systems , has been extremely effective and beneficial for the
treatment of a variety of illnesses, especially chronic illnesses. I
there fore believe there is scope for other alternative systems to be
able to cobtribute to the better health of people.

.............For those who live in communities that have not yet begun
to suffer the psychological, social and economic impact of the
epidemic, it is time to come together to create awareness of what
could lie ahead. Government ministries, health care workers, human
rights advocates, non-governmental and community-based organizations,
scientists and medical doctors must all unite in a partnership to
bring about the changes in attitude and behavior which can prevent the
further spread of the virus.

For the majority of the population
in India, traditional medicines are still the complementary form of therapy to
allopathic medicine that is utilized in the Rural areas. Hence the
importance of traditional medicine in the promotion of health becomes
an increasingly important issue in the context of Health for All by
the year 2000.
We wish you all the success on the
occasion of the 5th International Congress. Exhibition, Convocation
and Awards Presentation Ceremony.

............Traditional systems of
medicine have a major role to play in promoting health and preventing
disease and reinforcing the traditional values and fabric of the
society. I cannot help but recall at this Juncture, the fact that
science and children have immensely benefited from the discovery of
Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) for childhood diarrhoea which has its
routes in the traditional system of medicine

.............The system of Alternative medicines is becoming more and
more relevant in the present context of time when the modern medicine
is becoming costlier and beyond the reach of common man. The
Alternative system on the other hand is becoming a boon to the
suffering humanity and many a time these systems have cured hopeless
cases miraculously and that too without any side effects as so often
happens in the case of modern medicine. Government should make special
efforts for the advancement of the alternative system of medicines so
that more and more people can take advantage of it.
I am sure the
Congress will give an opportunity to the participants, to share their
experiences and the discussions would prove to be quite fruitful. I
hope the persons who will be presented Awards richly deserve the same.
They will dedicate themselves for the propagation of this system and
shall devote whole heartedly in the service of humanity.

..........Our
ancient lore is a treasure-trove of wisdom and knowledge. There is no
need for us to be mesmerised by things western. Westernisation does
not necessarily mean modernisation or ational thinking. There is much
to be learnt from our traditional systems, including traditional
systems of medicines.

Shri P.V. NarsimhaRao - Former Prime-Minister of India
............India has a rich heritage in the areas of traditional or
natural medicines. It is true that modern medical science has made a
tremendous contribution to the prevention and alleviation of diseases
and suffering but it is also a fact that modern medicine is still
inaccessible in vast areas of our country.
In recent
times, alternative systems of medicines have been subject to an
increase in popularity. Alternative or traditional medicines operate
on the principles of holism - they consider the human body as a
synthesis of its physical, mental and spiritual dimensions. Most
alternative systems of medicines have no side effects and are low cost
oriented. They have also proved to be very useful in certain diseases.
Thus, alternative systems of medicines can play a vital role in
national health care programmes.

............HIV/AIDs is now more
than a spreading health problem, it has begun to pose a grave economic
and social challenge to the world. Our effort should be on prevention,
reaching out to all sections of the population. The emphasis needs to
be as much on understanding, awareness creation and management as on
treatment in the strictly medical sense. Practitioners of all medical
sciences, including alternative medicines, face the challenge of
bringing to bear their knowledge, skill and commitment to fight this
epidemic. I send my good wishes for the success of the 2nd

.............Indian has a vast
population living in varied geographical and climatic conditions.
Extending health benefits to the farflung and remote villages of the

provide relief in cases where other forms of treatment have shown
little response. Its potential for ensuring outreach of health care
to the messes is immense.
