Dr. S.K. Agarwal
Dr. Suresh Kumar Agarwal, widely regarded as the pioneer of
the holistic medical movement in
India, the Founder
– President of India Board of Alternative medicine. An internationally renowned practitioner of alternative medicine, Dr. Agarwal is
also an organizer, visionary, author and teacher.
Right from the initial stage of his medical education he
recognized the value of treating “the whole person” consisting of the
physical aspect of the individual as is the practice with modern
medicine.
After studying the different systems of medicine, Dr.
Agarwal came to the conclusion that the various system needed to be
integrated to be render more effective and humane. This could be
accomplished by evolving a holistic system of treatment and practicing
a holistic life style.
It is especially in such a context that alternative
medicines are relevant as they are cost- effective medical service for
one and all. It has the advantage of being far more inexpensive than
modern medicine, has virtually no side-effects, is more acceptable to
people because of their ancient, times-tested prescriptions and are
inherently holistic in that these system treat the human being as a
whole and not just the physical body.
Born in 1961 in Rajasthan, Dr. Agarwal graduated from the
University of Calcutta in 1980. In 1984 he graduated with a Diploma
in Medicine and Surgery from the Council of Homoeopathic Medicine,
Govt. of West Bengal.He has completed Doctorate in Medicine in
Homoeopathy from University Grants Commission Recognised University
and Recognised by Central Council of Homoeopathy under Ministry of
Health & Family Welfare , Govt. of India. Also graduated in Ayurveda
from Hindi University, Allahbad and Naturopathy from the Indian
Institute of Naturopathy, Coimbatore. He also completed courses in
Yoga Therapy from Kaivalyadham, Pune and Vivekananda Kendra,
Kanyakumari. He then studied the different systems of the rapy in
leading institutions in India and abroad. He obtained a M.D. in
traditional & Alternative Medicine from the Open International
University, Colombo and a Ph.D. from Medicina Alternativa,
Kazakhastan (the then USSR). Dr.Agarwal was conferred the D.Sc.
Honoris Causa in 1994 by the Open International University, Colombo,
for his outstanding services to the promotion and popularization of
holistic healing in India.
He is the National Vice-Chancellor of the International
Association of Educators for World Peace and a visiting professor of
the
Open
International University, Colombo and East West University for
Holistic Health Science, California, USA.
He is editor of the Indian Journal of Holistic Health &
Medicine, and is author of several books besides having articles
published in leading newspapers and magazines of the country, and has
also actively participated in number of national and international
conferences organized by government and non- government organizations
in India and abroad, his name having become synonymous with
alternative medicines in India and has appeared in Asia
International’s Who’s Who for his outstanding contribution to the
cause of Alternative Medicine in India. Dr. Agarwal has organized a
number of successful
national and international conferences which were greatly
successful having received the blessings and well wishes of the Hon’ble President of India Hon’ble Vice- President of India, Hon’ble
Prime Minister of India, Hon’ble Health Minister of India and Hon’ble
Governors and Chief Minister of the different states of India and a
host of international luminaries such as Late Mother Teresa, H.H. the
Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela. Queen Elizabeth, Rev. Desmond Tutu, Dr.
Boutros Boutros Ghali (the then Secretary General of United Nations),
Dr. Kofi Annan (Secretary General of United Nations), Smt. Sonia
Gandhi and many others. These conferences were attended by delegates
from more than 50 countries world wide and also graced by a host of
dignitaries such as Mother Teresa, Governors, Union Ministers, State
Ministers and diplomats.
Dr. Agarwal holds wide ranging memberships / fellowships in
the health and medical field. Some of these are the Royal Society of
Health U.K.,
World Federation of Holistic Health, Italy; Medicina Alternativa
Colombo.
In recognition of his achievements in alternative medicines
and social welfare, Dr. Agarwal has received several prestigious
awards. In 1992 he was presented the Indira Gandhi Memorial Award by
Mr. Justice Samir Mukherjee and the following year he was presented
the Michael Madhusudan Award by Mr. Prashanta Chatterjee, Hon’ble
Mayor of Calcutta and in 1994 he receive the Vijay Rattan Award from
Mr. P.M. Sayeed, Union Minister. In 1995 he was presented the Manav
Sewa Award by the Hon’ble Governor of Orissa; the Rajiv Gandhi
National Unity Award by Mr. Vasant Sathe, President of India Council
for Cultural Relations; and Mother India International Award by Mr.
R.L. Bhatia, union Minister. More recently, Dr. Agarwal was honoured
with the Knight of Malta by the Sovereign Order of St. John of
Jerusalem, the Netaji Award and Mother Teresa Award.
